Located in Douglas County just 12 miles south of Denver, the cozy community of Highlands Ranch has a lot to offer its 96,000 residents. While modern-day Highlands Ranch began development in 1981, the area’s first settlers arrived over 100 years earlier. The historic Highlands Ranch Mansion, situated on 250 acres of land, was built around the turn of the twentieth century and still stands today. In addition to the Mansion, the Highlands Ranch Metro District—the community’s governing body—maintains two historic parks, each with its own fascinating story.

During inclement weather, residents can visit one of the community’s recreation centers, where they can find engaging ways to exercise indoors. Each rec center boasts its own unique features: there’s a climbing wall, a channel pool, and an indoor field of turf.
For kids, the Metro District offers exciting youth sports programs such as baseball, volleyball, and even ninja camp! Adults, too, can get in on the fun by signing up for activities like golf, kickball, or yoga. The Metro District also sponsors educational outreach programs aimed at teaching responsible environmental and community stewardship.
Highlands Ranch is home to a vibrant community. With support from the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District, the Highlands Ranch Community Association (HRCA) and Cultural Affairs Association (CAA) arrange enriching and entertaining events for families and people of all ages. From art installations and theatrical performances to farmer’s markets and holiday celebrations, the HRCA and CAA produce over 100 events a year. Some recent festivities include a homebrew class, princess tea party, summer concert series, and Oktoberfest.
A thriving cultural scene, easy access to Colorado’s beautiful outdoors, and interesting historical sites all make Highlands Ranch a great place to live. Young families will find the strong sense of community and variety of family-friendly events particularly attractive.
